I became a Marcella 100 Member in January 2016. God’s timing is always perfect. I had spent 2015 (the year I turned 50) trying to decide what I wanted to do with my “second half” of life. I loved being a commercial real estate and finance partner with my law firm, so I knew I didn’t want a new job, but I was restless. In the Fall of 2015 I stumbled upon Carolyn Custis James’s book “Half the Church.” It was perfect timing, as it opened truths to me that I knew in my heart but had never heard growing up in the church. In fact, I pretty much ignored teachings that insinuated that women were “less than,” but it did trouble me that I didn’t fit that model. During my year of praying about my “second half” I had even considered kicking my husband out of his role as a stay-at-home husband and father and being the stay-at-home wife to him and our 14 year old son. I thought, well, that's what my church growing up held up as the model of a good Christian woman. I can’t tell you how miserable a week or so of contemplating that option made me. When I read Carolyn’s book, I realized that I was a fellow warrior with the men in my life, and constraints to fit a model that didn’t fit me was not Godly and not sound teaching.
I met Jackie by accident. I mentioned to a good friend my revelations in the area of men and women in the church, and she said I should read “Lime Green.” Then I mentioned the same to my pastor and he said I should meet Jackie Roese, who was in our congregation. It didn’t dawn on me that Jackie had written the book until I had tried to catch her at church for many months and missed her. I decided to look her up in the church directory and when I saw the spelling of her name, I thought, “wait, I’ve seen that name!” so I rushed back to my Kindle and realized she had written the book that I loved so much. We finally met at church in the bathroom, where all important meetings of women take place. I was thrilled to support Jackie’s ministry through the Marcella 100, and I joined as quickly as I could!
The teaching that Jackie, Carolyn, and others are doing has made an incredible impact on my ability to serve God in the workplace. First, in August 2015 I was blessed to be elected to the Board of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Network, where myself and 12 others would set policy and direction to advance the achievements of 10,000 women worldwide in commercial real estate. I realized that the missing piece of what we are doing for women is engaging men as fellow warriors to advance women’s careers. We can’t do this without that partnership that God intended. And then in June 2016 I was named Dallas Office Managing Partner of my law firm, giving me the opportunity to model God to more than 300 employees. And, after going to the Marcella Summit and learning more about God’s plan for women and men working together, I was blessed to be assigned a great Christian man as my Deputy Managing Partner. In our first meeting together, I told Whit that I was going to be “out there” in being up-front about Jesus to our colleagues in the law firm and that he needed to pull me back if he thought I was going too far. And he said, accompanied by God-tingles down my spine, “I’m with you Vicky; you’ve got a brother in this.” What incredible joy it is to live out in the workplace and internationally through CREW, God’s plan of women and men working together as fellow warriors for His purposes.
